At the Waihi round of Ripper Rugby on Tuesday 7th November, Waihi East School A (made up of mainly year 6 and some year 5 pupils) performed admirably taking first place from six schools. These tournaments are being held in different regions throughout the Thames Valley and are organized by the Thames Valley Rugby Union.

Teams from Waihi East, Waimata, Waihi Central, Paeroa Central and Whangamata enjoyed a perfect day for Ripper Rugby (like touch rugby except tear off tags are used to tag players). Each team in the year 5 / 6 category played four twenty minute games over the course of the morning, with the pace being fast and furious throughout. A year 7 / 8 division was also run at the same venue (Waihi College), this allowed each category a twenty minute break before playing again. Teams were mixed (girls and boys) and the players had a lot of fun in the free flowing matches.

Waihi East had a second team at the tournament Waihi East B (made up of mainly year 5’s and some year 6’s) who contested their matches keenly all morning. Some great tries were scored by this team.

Our winning team now goes on to the Ripper Rugby Tournament Finals to be held in Paeroa later this month. To reach the finals our East A team beat Waimata, Waihi Central, Whangamata and Paeroa Central and all team members contributed well. Examples of our stand out players included Kyle (leading by example as captain, everywhere on the field and strong running), Jordan (like a rocket through midfield) and Jordan T (gliding runs). Rachel (took on the defence), Matthew (tireless in all phases – could tear the tags off ten opponents in ten seconds flat), Bradley swerving and weaving his way past other players and Brittany great support play. Tate showed good speed stretching the opposition and Kahn surged upfield with a turn of pace and evasiveness that rocked the other teams.

Our teams acquitted themselves very well at this event last week and one team [Christiarne, Tim, Nicole and Carla] got first place in one of the activities and another team [Jordan, Marvyn, Tommy and Sarah] second in another. Thanks to Sharon Samson for her work with the Technology Team.

Technology

Team Member Nicole’s View

On Thursday the 26th of October a few schools from around the area gathered at Waihi Beach Westpac Community Hall for the
BP Technology Challenge. Two groups totalling sixteen children and one reserve from Waihi East School went to the challenge.

The first task for the BP Technology morning was the Marble Roll. What you had to do was make a device that you could either drop a marble onto, or into, to hit a can three metres away from your device.

There were two mystery challenges as well, the last event of the day involved making a device that could weigh out 150 grams of peanuts. You could only use newspaper, paper bags, cellotape, rubberbands, two sheets of A4 paper and some peanuts to make your device.
