Rise Above and Shine
Six schools from the Waihi/Waihi Beach District took part in the annual Waihi and District Primary Schools’ Cross Country event for primary schools on Wednesday 9th June at Morgan Park in Waihi. Competitiors from year one to six raced in their gender and year group categories. The brisk early morning temperatures were warmed somewhat by sunny conditions, light winds and the enthusiastic support of cheering children and their families.
This district event led on to the Northern Cluster Cross Country at Whakamaramara School on Thursday 17th June (which included schools from the northern side of Tauranga all the way up to Waihi) with the top seven runners in the year four to six year groups eligible to race at the northern event.
The final level of competition for year 4, 5 and 6 runners who placed in the top seven of their year and gender group at the Northern Cluster event, was to go on and compete at the Western Bay of Plenty Inter-School Cross Country Championships at Waipuna Park, Welcome Bay, Tauranga on Friday 25 June 2010. See below for the results from all three events.

The top seven placegetters in all year groups received certificates and earnt points for their school as part of a competition based on performance at this cross country. The result of the schools’ competition saw Waihi East Primary School come first with an achievement score of 75.59%, Waihi Beach Primary School in second place on 61.72% and Waimata Primary School in third on 48.84%. Points were allocated for placings as follows 1st = 10 points, 2nd = 8 points, 3rd = 6 points, 4th = 4 points, 5th = 3 points, 6th = 2 points, 7th = 1 point. The total number of points earnt by a school was converted into an achievement percentage. This percentage was worked out in relation to the size of the school using this formula – school’s total top seven place points divided into it’s roll then multiplied by one hundred.
